β FAQs
Do we need a permit or special passes to visit Sissu via Atal Tunnel?
No special permit (like the NGT Rohtang Pass permit) is required for private vehicles or tourist cabs traveling to Sissu via Atal Tunnel. However, state green taxes or local entry tolls apply at check-posts near Solang and North Portal.
Is Sissu open during winter and when can we find snow there?
Yes. While Atal Tunnel keeps the route open for most of the winter, extreme snowfall or ice buildup at the portals can cause temporary closures by local authorities. Heavy snow is typically present from December through March/April.
What should clients wear and pack for a Sissu day trip?
The temperature in Sissu and Lahaul Valley is noticeably colder and windier than in Manali town. Layered thermal clothing, windproof/waterproof jackets, sunglasses (to protect against snow glare), warm gloves and sturdy shoes. Waterproof snow boots and suits can be rented at shops in Solang/Palchan before crossing the tunnel.
Is altitude sickness (AMS) a common problem on the Sissu tour and how should clients manage it?
Sissu sits at an altitude of approximately 10,200 feet (3,100 meters). While the rise from Manali (6,700 ft) is rapid via Atal Tunnel, severe AMS is rare on a simple day trip. Clients to stay hydrated, avoid running or sudden physical exertion upon exiting the tunnel and avoid heavy, oily meals right before traveling.
